Bhavanis relinquish deeksha

Staff Reporter

VIJAYAWADA: Heavy rush was witnessed on the ultimate day of Dasara festival, Vijayadasami, at Indrakeeladri, abode of goddess Kanakadurga, on Sunday.

The temple was thrown open to the public at around 3 a.m., and heavy influx was seen from dawn onwards. The temple priests adorned the goddess as ‘Sri Rajarajeswari Devi', the last of the alankarams, during the day.

Besides regular Vedic rituals, ‘Purnahuthi' was performed on the temple premises. The rush at the temple rose significantly as Bhavanis stormed in large numbers to relinquish their deeksha.

In the evening, queue lines were filled with devotees, more particularly Bhavanis. Braving heavy downpour, the Bhavanis marched ahead chanting ‘Jai Bhavani', ‘Jai Durga'. The Bhavanis relinquish their deeksha after circumambulation of Indrakeeladri, popularly known as giri pradakshinam, and going for darshan of presiding deity. The ghats have been kept ready for relinquishment of deeksha. The temple made arrangements for ‘irumudi', a sack with two compartments to carry holy articles. The temple authorities are expecting Bhavanis rush for next three days.

Meanwhile, the durga ghat, Prakasam barrage and vicinity reverberated with the chanting of ‘Bhavani Mata ki Jai', as thousands of devotees witnessed the processional deities of the goddess and her consort being ceremoniously placed in a specially decorated ‘Hamsa Vahanam' - a huge boat decorated like a swan - for the Teppotsavam.
