VISAKHAPATNAM: The indefinite fast launched by CPI district secretary J.V. Satyanarayana Murthy (Nani) demanding implementation of minimum wages for contract workers in a fertilizer plant entered the third day on Sunday. Mr. Murthy, general secretary of AITUC-affiliated Visakha Contract Workers' Union (VCWU), said he launched the fast as the party's repeated pleas for signing wage revision agreement and implementing minimum wages were ignored by the management of Coromandel International Ltd (CIL). He said they were insisting on implementation of GO Ms. No. 117 in the fertilizer plant of CIL belonging to Murugappa Group. The GO recommends minimum wages for chemical and pesticide units. He said instead of daily wages of Rs. 188, the management was giving only Rs.155 to about 800 contract workers engaged by it. Praja Rajyam MLAs -- Ganta Srinivasa Rao and Ch. Venkataramaiah and Telugu Desam MLA Velagapudi Ramakrishna Babu visited the hunger strike camp. The workers launched an agitation under the banner of VCWU a month ago. VCWU working president Ch. Raghavendra Rao met Congress MLAs -- Dronamraju Srinivasa Rao and Tainala Vijay Kumar -- and sought their intervention to solve the problem. Mr. Raghavendra Rao said the management failed to take part in talks convened by the Joint Commissioner of Labour in Hyderabad and Visakhapatnam.
