Bangalore: Over 1,500 health assistants working in Bangalore Urban region have not received their salaries for one year now. Further, 900 junior health assistants (women), trained by the State Government for the posts of health inspectors nine months ago, are yet to get postings. Protesting against the Government's apathy towards their problems, office-bearers of the Karnataka State Senior and Junior Health Assistant's Central Association will stage a demonstration in front of the Directorate of Health and Family Welfare in the city on Tuesday. Addressing presspersons here on Monday, association president B.H. Gangaiah said the health assistants have been denied their legitimate benefits in salary, increments and promotions. “After spending crores of rupees on their training, the Government says women are not eligible for the post of health inspectors. While they have started recruiting men for the posts, they again selected 105 women last month for training. This is ridiculous,” Mr. Gangaiah said. Probe request Alleging misappropriation of funds and misuse of official machinery by the medical officer and other staff at the Kadugondanahalli Community Health Centre, Mr. Gangaiah demanded a probe into the matter. He also alleged that it was being done in collusion with the Bangalore Urban District Health Officer (DHO). More than 300 officer-bearers of the association plan to join the protest today. “If our demands are not met, we will intensify our agitation and we will stop sending monthly reports to the department,” Mr. Gangaiah threatened.
