Lighting the lamp:President of the Shimoga Zilla Panchayat H.C. Basavarajappa inaugurating ‘Krishi Utsav 2010' in Sagar on Monday. SAGAR: President of the Shimoga Zilla Panchayat H.C. Basavarajappa said on Monday that there was a need for introducing innovative farming methods. He was speaking after inaugurating “Krishi Utsav 2010” organised here by the Agriculture Department. Though science and technology had been receiving utmost importance, they are not being put to proper use in agriculture. Excessive use of fertilizers and use of spurious seeds had affected agriculture. Importance should be given to reverse this trend, he said. Mr. Basavarajappa said that women played a pivotal role in promoting sustainable agriculture. He said that native farming methods should not be ignored in the enthusiasm to adopt foreign methods. Chairman of the Organic Farming Mission A.S. Anand, who released a booklet on organic farming brought out on the occasion, said that it was possible to grow harmless foodgrains through organic farming. President of the Sagar Taluk Panchayat Yashodamma presided over the function. Joint Director of Agriculture Shivamurthappa welcomed the gathering.
