A special prayer to the Kali

Correspondent

First puja held at source of the river in Kushavali

Beginnings:People of the villages around Kushavali gather in the forest, at the source of the Kali, to offer prayers.

Karwar: For the first time, a puja was held for the Kali river at its place of origin, Kushavali, on Vijayadashami day.

Inspired by the ‘teerthodbhava' programme at Talacauvery, where the Cauvery is believed to originate, residents from Deriya, Terali, Kumbarawada and Joida villages in Uttara Kannada offered prayers to the river on Sunday.

The village people pointed out that the Kali was the only river in the State along which five thermal projects and dams are situated.

People around Kushavali migrated to other places when the dams were constructed, the first of which came up in 1970. Although only four families now live in Kushavali village, its natives return home once in a while to pray to the Shivalinga at the source of the river.

However, this is the first time that a puja was held on Vijayadashami day.

Big plans for next year

Organiser of the puja Jayanand Derekar said the event would be held on a grander scale next year. Member of Terali Gram Panchayat Ratnakar Desai said it would help develop tourism in the region.

The Kali originates in a thick forest in Joida taluk of Uttara Kannada, and flows west to joins the Arabian sea at Karwar.
