Work on sports club begins in Hubli

Hubli: Minister for Rural Development and Panchayat Raj and district in-charge Jagadish Shettar has said that experts' opinion had been sought on whether to renovate Sawai Gandharva Memorial Hall in Hubli or demolish it and build a new structure in its place.

He was speaking after laying the foundation stone for the Rs. 8-crore recreation and sports club complex of the Karnataka Gymkhana Association here on Monday. Karnataka Gymkhana Association has taken up the responsibility of building the sports complex by mobilising funds on its own.

Lauding the initiative taken by the association in building the sports complex, Mr. Shettar said that such initiatives would help in providing necessary infrastructure and encouragement to the sportspersons of the region.

Deputy Commissioner Darpan Jain spoke about the efforts the administration was making to build sports infrastructure in the region. He said the indoor stadium at Dharwad was ready while Nehru Stadium in Hubli was being developed. The work on laying synthetic track at R.N. Shetty Stadium has also been initiated, he added.

Earlier, Chairman of the newly formed Development Committee of the association Ramesh Shetty said that 30 members had donated Rs. 5 lakh each for the project and the works would begin with the initial fund of Rs. 1.5 crore.

Facilities

In the 4.5 acres of land available, a jogging track, turf wicket for cricket, pavilion to accommodate 4,000 persons, a club house with 32 rooms, a swimming pool, badminton hall, gymnasium, lawn tennis court, conference hall and other facilities would be built, he said.
