Subbanna looking at the sculptures at the national camp organised on the university campus in Hampi on Monday. HAMPI: Vice-chairman of the Lalitkala Akademi K.R. Subbanna has underlined the need for Kannada University to introduce a full-fledged department for fine arts. He was delivering the valedictory address at the fortnight-long national sculpture camp organised by the university on its campus, on Monday. Mr. Subbanna said, “The department should be equipped with modern equipment for the promotion of art, and the benefit of artists and researchers. I hope the university, adjacent to Hampi, which is known for its art and architecture, will emerge as the Vishwabharati Santiniketan.” Commending the efforts of the university in organising the camp by blending traditional and contemporary sculpture, Mr. Subbanna promised assistance for any such initiatives in the future. Vice-Chancellor Murigeppa A. said that art was free from language barriers as the artistes' language was universal. Art critic K.V. Subramanya, university registrar Manjunath Bevinakatti, convener of the camp Veeresh Badiger, director Venkatachalapati, and artistes M.C. Ramesh , K.M. Sabannavar and Shivanand Bantnur spoke. Fourteen artistes, including Nandkumar from Bangalore, Grijesh Kumar from Baroda, Rajashekar Nair from Chennai, S.D. Hariprasad from Visakapatnam, B.R. Geetanjali from Mysore and Swaranalatha from Orissa participated in the camp.
