NEW DELHI: Indira Gandhi National Open University has started a new full-time on-campus academic course.

The Master of Arts in Labour and Development which is one of the full-time programmes is being offered by the university's School of Interdisciplinary and Trans-disciplinary Studies. The programme looks at the process of development through the new perspective of labour. It provides a comprehensive understanding of labour in the development process with special reference to India and other developing countries.

The curriculum will help students comprehend theoretical, conceptual, legal and empirical issues pertaining to labour. The teaching sessions will consist of classroom discussions and reviews geared towards improving the analytical faculties of the students. Regular seminars, film shows and workshops on issues related to labour and development will be held.

Students from rural and backward areas have also been selected for the course which is an opportunity for students to understand the socio-political and historical underpinnings of development processes in different economies with focus on labour. It is divided into four academic semesters and includes field visits and a dissertation. On completion of the course, students can be absorbed in international and national labour organisations, research institutes, non-government and corporate sectors.
