“Centre must remove State's yearning on Tamils issue”

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: It is the responsibility of the Union government to remove the yearning of Tamil Nadu on the Sri Lankan Tamils question, according to Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam president and Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi.

It was the yearning of the State that steps should be taken to impress upon the Sri Lankan government the need to ensure that the Tamils, at least now, should be given rights, the Chief Minister said in a statement.

In this context, he referred to The Hindu's editorial, ‘Beyond resettlement,' published on Monday.

Referring to the DMK's role in highlighting the Sri Lankan Tamils' issue since 1956, he said his party had been of the view that for securing all basic rights of the Tamils, a political settlement would alone be the lasting solution.

He recalled how the Tamil Eelam Solidarity Organisation (TESO), at its meeting in Madurai on May 4, 1986, gave a call to different organisations to avoid fratricidal war.
