Ayodhya: LJP MLA moves Supreme Court

New Delhi: Lok Jan Shakti Party MLA in the Delhi Assembly on Monday moved the Supreme Court, challenging the Allahabad High Court verdict on the Ayodhya title suits. He said the matter had been decided on the basis of faith and belief rather than on facts, law and merit.

Mr. Iqbal, who was not a party to the suits in the High Court, contended that “any decision based on faith is not acceptable to us (Mulims), as it will set a bad precedent in a democratic country like ours ruled by the Constitution and the law.”

He cited the 1994 Supreme Court judgment that laid down guidelines for disposal of the Ayodhya title suits. According to these guidelines, “there should be no loser or winner in a sensitive matter like this.”

The petition said: “The place where the idols of Ram Lalla are placed in a makeshift temple, raised after the demolition of the disputed structure, could not be decided on the basis of faith and belief as the case has to be decided on documentary evidence. Any such findings would be against the spirit of the Constitution.”

The petitioner prayed for an interim stay of the operation of the High Court judgment.
