Mangalore boy to lead U-19 State chess team

Udupi lass makes it to Karnataka girls' team

MANGALORE: Nihal Manjunath, a Derik's Chess School talent, has secured title in the State Pre-University College level Chess Championship organised by Anatha Sevashram PU College, Malladalli, Chitradurga, recently.

Another chess talent from school Payal Vinaykumar of Udupi bagged the third place in the girls section.

According to a pressnote from the school, Nihal scored unbeaten 7.5 points in eight rounds with seven victories and a draw while Payal scored six points in seven rounds. Nihal will now represent and lead the Karnataka State Under-19 Boys team in the National Chess Championship organised by School Games Federation of India. Payal will be part of the girls' team for the event.

Nihal Manjunath is the son of Manjunath Shetty and Veena Manjunath.

He is studying in first PU in St. Aloysius PU College here. Payal is the daughter of Vinaykumar and Saritha Vinaykumar. She is studying in II PU in Poornaprjna PU College, Udupi.
