NIC technology to speed up poll results

Staff Reporter

KOCHI: Ballot papers for the election to the district panchayat were brought to the district collectorate here on Tuesday from Thiruvananthapuram where they were printed.

Ballots were sorted under the supervision of returning officers of 14 block panchayats and taken to various treasuries concerned.

Ballots for the district panchayat divisions completely falling within the limits of a single block panchayat could be taken away by the returning officers without having to open the boxes. Eighteen out of the total 26 divisions of the district panchayat fell under this category.

However, returning officers of the remaining eight divisions had to count the ballots before accepting since those divisions extended beyond the limits of more than one block panchayat. About 17.50 lakh ballots were printed for the district panchayat.

Besides, 70-odd stationery items for polling had also been readied at the collectorate. These items, along with voting machines and ballot boxes, will be distributed to polling officials from the distribution centres from October 24 morning.

District Collector M. Beena, who is also the district election officer, asked all municipal secretaries and block development officers to accept all polling equipment from the collectorate by Wednesday afternoon.

The trial run of Trend, the technology developed by the National Informatics Centre (NIC) to ensure speedy declaration of poll results, would be held across the State on Wednesday. The trial will be undertaken by networking all 14 district headquarters and the SECin the capital.
