CHENNAI: The GIS (geographical information system) technology will be extremely useful in the efficient implementation of power transmission projects, speakers at a training programme said on Tuesday. Referring to the implementation of the 400-KV transmission network from Pugalur, near Karur, to Sunguvar Chatram-Kalivaradhapattu, M. Ramalingam, Director, Institute of Remote Sensing, Anna University, said the GIS technology was applied to execute the transmission project through inaccessible terrain. Other benefits of the GIS technology included identifying the optimal route plan using different routing algorithms, studying the sag in the transmission lines to minimise transmission loss, monitoring faults without going to sites and evaluating the performance of hydel power stations, Dr. Ramalingam said. S. Akshayakumar, Director, Transmission, Tamil Nadu Transmission Corporation, said the GIS would help in asset mapping of the transmission lines of the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB). About 10 years ago, the Board undertook a pilot project using the technology to map the entire distribution system in Anna Nagar here. It could not be expanded to other parts of the city due to poor resolution of imageries and the prohibitive cost. P. Mannar Jawahar, Vice-Chancellor, Anna University, also addressed the inauguration of the three-day training programme.
