dated October 21, 1960: Gold rush in London

A frantic “gold rush” sent the price of gold on the London market surging to 38.5 dollars a fine ounce – three and a half dollars above the official price on October 20. Bullion dealers declared that the London gold market had never known such conditions and called it “phenomenal,” “fantastic” and “terrific”. One dealer said the great scramble began earlier this week when Swiss bankers advised their customers to change American dollars into gold.
