Pathanamthitta will be made fallow-land-free: manifesto

Project to upgrade standard of education promised

Schemes for empowering women proposed

PATHANAMTHITTA: The Left Democratic Front (LDF) election manifesto, which was released by the LDF district committee on Wednesday, promises to make Pathanamthitta a fallow land-free district if the front is voted to power in the district panchayat polls.

The LDF poll manifesto said the coalition was planning to implement a comprehensive scheme, in association with grama panchayats, to launch paddy cultivation in fields that have been lying fallow since the past several years.

It further promises to launch a comprehensive project to upgrade the standard of education in all schools in the district by effectively utilising the assistance from the State government as well as the Centre.

Communist Party of India (Marxist) district secretary K. Ananthagopan released the election manifesto by handing over a copy to LDF district convener Alex Kannamala at a function held at the Pathanamthitta Press Club hall.

Mr. Ananthagopan said the bee-keeping project launched by the previous district panchayat as part of a women empowerment scheme would be completed in a time-bound manner. He said the LDF, if elected to power, would set up a honey processing plant, along with a bottling unit and Agmark laboratory, on Parakode block panchayat premises.

The LDF manifesto promises time-bound completion of the ongoing work on the multi-storey women and child ward at the District Hospital in Kozhencherry.

Mr. Ananthagopan said an LDF-controlled district panchayat would launch more schemes aimed at women's empowerment, besides taking the initiative to bring all women in the district under the purview of one or the other Kudumbasree unit.

Library-centred cultural activities would be promoted with a view to protecting the rich cultural tradition and heritage of the region. The LDF poll manifesto also promises to find a permanent solution to drinking water problems. It says the LDF-controlled district panchayat would take all steps to exploit the tourism potential of the district.

Mundappally Thomas, CPI district secretary; Jerry Easow Oommen, Kerala Congress (Thomas); A.. Padmakumar and T.K.G. Nair, CPI(M) district committee members; were also present.
