THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Campaign for the local body elections in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod for which polling will be held on October 23 will end on Thursday. The State Election Commission said here on Wednesday that the campaign would close at 5 p.m. and that the deadline was applicable to the campaign through the media also. The SEC stated that arrangements had been completed for holding elections in 510 local bodies in these districts. A total of 16,390 booths had been set up. Of this, 2,400 booths had been identified sensitive. The police had been asked to make extra security here. Over 1.5 lakh employees had been deputed for election duty during the first phase. A total of 3,266 voting machines will be used in municipalities and corporations. The ballot paper will be white in grama panchayats, pink in block panchayats and blue in district panchayats. The polling will be between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. Those standing in queue at 5 p.m. will be issued tokens and allowed to vote. The SEC made it clear that identity cards were not compulsory for voting. But if polling officials had doubts about the identity of any voter, they could demand an identity record. The records which would be considered include voter identity card, driving licence, ration card, passport, PAN card and photo affixed passbooks of accounts opened a year ago and which were still active of banks other than primary cooperative societies.
