Camps to prepare rolls for teachers' constituencies

Response disappointing, says Commissioner

461 graduates and six teachers have submitted applications so far

CHENNAI: The District Election Office, Chennai, will start special camps on Saturday for preparing electoral rolls for the Graduates' and Teachers' constituencies in the proposed Legislative Council.

Chennai Corporation Commissioner D. Karthikeyan, who is also the District Election Officer, on Wednesday convened a meeting of representatives of all political parties to discuss issues pertaining to preparation of the electoral rolls.

The number of applications received from graduates in all 10 zones of Chennai Corporation is 461 in the past 20 days. Just six teachers have submitted applications so far.

“The response is disappointing,” said Mr. Karthikeyan.

The last date for submitting the applications is November 6. The special camps would be conducted on October 23, 24, 30 and 31. The assistant electoral registration officers and zonal officers would participate in the special camps.

The civic body would also conduct separate meeting for teachers to create awareness.

The applications would be available at the zonal offices till November 6. Photocopy of the applications or handwritten applications would also be accepted. The representatives of political parties suggested extension of the deadline for submitting application forms on account of the festival season.

They asked the civic body to create awareness among graduates and teachers about the preparation of the rolls and on the website of Office of Chief Electoral Officer, Tamil Nadu (http://www.elections.tn.

nic.in).
