Deadline for speed governors

CHENNAI: The Transport Department has set December 9 as the deadline for all buses and vans that ferry school students to install speed governors.

In order to safeguard the interest of the students, the State government had issued an order [G.O. 563] in June stating that all new vehicles being purchased by educational institutions after June 10, 2010, must have speed governors. Following this, more than 3,000 new vehicles across the State, including 61 in Chennai, have installed the equipment at the time of registration. Vehicles that were purchased before June 10 have been given time till December 9 to comply.
