No Cabinet meeting today

Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Cabinet will not meet on Thursday against the background of the elections to local self-government institutions. The next meeting will be on October 26.

Most of the Ministers are on campaign trail. Besides, the Cabinet cannot take policy and other important decisions in view of the code of conduct for the elections. This is cited as the reason for dropping the weekly Cabinet meeting.

Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan is, however, holding a high-level conference of officials here to discuss measures to control distributors of lotteries of other States.

It would decide on filing an appeal against the recent High Court order allowing more draws of lotteries and enforcement of the Ordinance enacted by the government recently regarding acceptance of advance tax from lottery distributors.
