Douglas Devananda's plea: hearing adjourned
Special Correspondent
CHENNAI: The Madras High Court on Wednesday adjourned to Thursday further hearing on a petition by Sri Lankan Minister Douglas Devananda, seeking to set aside an order of 1994 declaring him a ‘proclaimed offender' in a Chennai murder case. The case relates to a murder at Choolaimedu on November 1, 1986. Thirunavukkarasu died when he was shot at.
In his petition, Mr. Devananda stated that after he was enlarged on bail, he was expatriated to Sri Lanka. Therefore, he believed that the case against him had been dropped. He had no knowledge about the case after the 1987 agreement between Sri Lanka and India and his expatriation. He was willing to abide by any condition, including appearance and facing trial.
When the matter came up before Justice G.M. Akbar Ali, the lower court concerned filed a report.
