This Day That Age
The British Government have received an unofficial American proposal to make NATO gradually into a nuclear Power, informed sources said in London on October 20. The plan, to be carried out by stages, was worked out by General Norstad, American Supreme Commander of NATO forces, and by the Pentagon, but has not been made into an official proposal. Any such plan would in the long run force Britain to give up her independent deterrent weapon, the sources added. So far, as the Foreign Office indicated, the British Government have received only semi-official preliminary indications on U.S. thinking in the matter. Some authorities here termed the project “revolutionary.” It would actually turn NATO into a nuclear power, integrating the atomic forces of member countries.
