dated October 22, 1960: Closure of two papers

Mr. L.J. Cadbury, Chairman of the Daily News Limited, on October 20 revealed that the News Chronicle and Star were sold for a basic price of 1,925,000 sterling. He made this disclosure in a statement replying to what he described as “misgivings” and “mis-statements” following the closure of the two papers. The News Chronicle, a Liberal daily with a circulation of more than one million, was absorbed this week by the Conservative Daily Mail. Its companion journal, the London evening newspaper the Star, was swallowed simultaneously by the London Evening News.
