Prathima makes the cut in bowling World Cup

BANGALORE: Prathima Hegde made the top 24 cut in the ongoing 46th Qubica AMF bowling World Cup in Tulon in France.

Prathima with an average of 193.19 in 16 games made it to the top 24, for the second successive year, according to information received here.

In a field of 76 bowlers from all over the world, Prathima battled for the last qualifying spot with Felicia Wong of Canada, Julieanne Mollet of New Zealand and Pritta Kantola of Finland and nosed ahead of the competitors by 2, 9 and 11 pins respectively.

In the final round of qualifying consisting of five games, Prathima started poorly with a game of 150 but bowled 201, 202, 204 and 204 in the next four games to edge out the competition.

In the men's category, Dilbir Singh of India had a poor tournament and finished at 72nd position in a field of 91 with an average of 183.30.

The top 24 bowlers will bowl eight games on Friday to make the last eight grade.

Kho-kho teams

The boys' and girls' teams which will represent Karnataka in the 30th junior National kho-kho championship, to be held at Bhilai from October 23 to 27, were announced here on Thursday.

The teams:

Boys: Ashoka, Suprith, Deelip, P. Naveen, Shivakumar, Vihav, Suil Sir Shettar, Veeresh Pujar, Shashikumar, Anil Kumar, M.Y. Danyan, Thippeswamy. Coach: Thippeswamy.

Girls: S. Smitha, Jamuna, Madhumala, Pavithra, K. Diksha, Shalini, S. Arpitha, Manasa, Roopa, Daneshwari, Asha, Narasamma. Coach: Mahadevappa .

Nikshep in final

The top seeds, B.R. Nikshep of Bangalore and A. Shameema of Tamil Nadu entered both the under-12 and under-14 singles finals in the boys and girls sections respectively in the Enerzal AITA Champion Series junior tennis tournament here on Thursday.

Nikshep, outplayed C. Vasisht 6-1, 6-1 in the under-12 semifinals and set up a title clash with V. Jeevan of Tamil Nadu. In the under-14 semifinals, Nikshep fought his way from the brink to beat the unseeded S. Ganesh of Tamil Nadu 3-6, 7-6( 5 ), 6-3. He meets the third seed, B.S. Rahul in the final.

The results (semifinals):

Boys: Under-14: B.R. Nikshep (Kar) bt S. Ganesh (TN) 3-6, 7-6(5), 6-3; B.S. Rahul (Kar) bt Arjun Muralidhar (Kar) 6-2, 6-1.

Doubles: K.S. Chiranthan & Arjun Muralidhar (Kar) bt Vatsin Thaker & Dhruv Sunish (Mah) 4-2, 5-4(3).

Under-12: V. Jeevan (TN) bt Dhruv Sunish (Mah) 6-2, 6-3; Nikshep bt C. Vasisht (Kar) 6-1, 6-1.

Girls: Under-14: A. Shameema (TN) bt Shloka Kumar (Kar) 6-7(3), 6-1, 6-2; Preeti Bhandurge (Mah) bt R. Abinikka (TN) 6-1, 6-4.

Doubles: Reshma Ganapathy & Abinakka (TN) bt Shivani Manjann & Gopika Madhu (Kar) 4-2, 4-0; S. Soh & .Dhwani kumar (Kar) bt Madumitha Meenakshi & Honeyshya Raj (TN) 5-3, 4-1.

Under-12: A. Shameema bt Shrayashree (TN) 6-0, 6-1; R. Abinikka (TN) bt R. Sai Avanthika (TN) 6-4, 6-1 .

RNSIT wins

RN Shetty Institute of Technology (RNSIT) overturned an 18-25 halftime deficit into a narrow 51-47 win over RVCE to advance into the four team league stage of the Dr. M.S. Ramaiah Memorial inter-engineering colleges basketball tournament at the MSRIT courts here on Thursday.

MSRIT, MVJCE and New Horizon CE (NHCE) are the other teams to make the men's league stage.

In the women's league encounter NHCE scrapped past RVCE 32-30 thanks to some high percentage shooting by Reeth, who accounted for 19 points.

MSRIT downed Pesit 40-25 in the other league match.

The results: Men (knockout): MSRIT 63 (Abhilash 19, Ananth 14) bt East Point 38 (Karthik Reddy 11).

New Horizon 33 (Arun Mathew 16) bt Dayanand Sagar 29 (Nishanth 14).

RNSIT 51 (Prasad 13) bt RVCE 47 (Soorya 14).

Saif, Sachin shine

Combined City XI drew with Bangalore Zone in the KSCA under-16 inter-zonal cricket tournament here on Thursday.

A century by Saif Siddique (122 with 21 fours) for Combined City XI and a nine-wicket haul by R.G. Sachin for Bangalore Zone were the highlights of the match.

The scores: Combined City XI 255 in 64.4 overs (Saif Siddique 122, Kunal P. Sanghvi 29, Venkatesh 26, Vishwanath three for 38, R.G. Sachin six for 39) and 160 in 35 overs (Vedanth 30, Sairam Ramesh 30, Kunal P. Sanghvi 40 n.o., Pradeep 30 n.o., R.G. Sachin three for 40) drew with Bangalore Zone 190 in 64 overs (Aaron Ajith Fernandes 30, Prasidh M. Krishna 35 n.o., Lathif Patel four for 24, Kunal B. Sanghvi three for 28) and 72 for three in 24 overs (Tilak Karthik 42 n.o.) .
