Bengal beats Orissa, qualifies

KOLKATA: Bengal qualified for the all-India Syed Mushtaq Ali Twenty20 tournament as East Zone champion after defeating Orissa by 18 runs in the final league match of the zonal leg at Cuttack on Sunday.

Orissa also made it to the National meet, after finishing second. Opting to bat, Shreevats Goswami and Anustup Majumdar gave Bengal a rousing opening wicket stand of 60 runs. Goswami made 43 off 46 balls with three fours.

A middle-order collapse saw the team plunge into crisis but a swashbuckling unbeaten 35 by former captain Laxmi Ratan Shukla (17b, 2x4, 3x6) enabled Bengal reach 132 for six in 20 overs.

Orissa began badly, losing its openers cheaply. It was No. 3 B. Samantaray (22) and lower-order Reshmi Ranjan Parida (24) kept the fight going. The Bengal bowlers stuck to a tight line, giving no room for Orissa batsmen to play shots. Finally, Orissa folded up for 114 for eight in 20 overs. Ashok Dinda and Shukla picked up two wickets apiece.

Assam thumped Jharkhand by five wickets to finish third in the league standing.

Unlucky

Early morning rain left the outfield slushy, forcing the Bengal-Assam game to be abandoned in the East Zone leg of the Vinoo Mankad Trophy (under-19) game at the Deshabandhu Park. The teams shared the points.

Jharkhand won the second game of the day, beating Orissa by four wickets with a bonus point at the Jadavpur University 2nd Campus.

The scores: Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy: Bengal 132 for six (S. Goswami 43, L.R. Shukla 35 n.o., Dhiraj Singh two for 23) bt Orissa 114 for eight in 20 overs (R.R. Das 24, B.B. Samantaray 22, A. Dinda two for 23, L.R. Shukla two for 31).

Jharkhand 138 for six in 20 overs (I. Jaggi 61 n.o., Rajiv Kumar 21, Pritam Das two for 28, Parvez Aziz two for 21) lost to Assam 142 for five in 19.2 overs (P. Aziz 29, Dhiraj Sharma 46, Y.V. Krishnaty two for 28, Shabhaz Nadeem two for 24).

Vinoo Mankad Trophy (U-19): Orissa 137 in 42 overs (Amit Das 20, Sujit Lenka 22, Dominic Rex three for four, Kundan Singh three for 34, Pawan Singh two for 14) lost to Jharkhand 140 for six in 37.5 overs (Ashish Yadav 66, Pappu Singh 31) .
