KOLKATA: After a gap of 12 years, the Bengal men's team qualified for the all-India inter-State National badminton championship by overcoming Uttar Pradesh 3-1 in the East Zone inter-state meet which concluded at Jamshedpur on Sunday. Bengal won 3-1 with veteran Arup Baidya playing a pivotal role in the victory. Bengal also qualified in the women's and boys' sections but failed in the girls' category. The results (finals): Men's team championship: Bengal bt Uttar Pradesh 3-1 (Ashutosh Tiwary lost to Anurag Sharma 8-21, 15-21; Arup Baidya bt Ravinder Singh 21-18, 21-8; Baidya and Sourav Chatterjee bt T.S. Bisht and D.B. Thapa 21-14, 21-17; Sourav Chatterjee bt A. Singh 21-13, 21-14). Women: Bengal bt UP 2-0 (Rituparna Das bt Sara Naqvi 21-12, 21-14; Rituparna and Amrita Mukherjee bt Sara and B. Singh 21-14, 21-13).
