NEW DELHI: Hardeep Kaur scored the match-winner as Government Senior Secondary School, Shahabad, defeated Birsa Munda Vidyapitha, Rourkela, 5-4 after leading 2-1 at the interval in the semifinals of the 17th Nehru junior girls' hockey tournament here on Monday. It was the efficient execution of two penalty corners by skipper Rani that put the Haryana team in the lead after Orissa had shot ahead through a goal by Birajini Ekka. When Orissa equalised through Reshma Ekka with a penalty corner conversion in the 32nd minute, Haryana pumped home two goals in response in the space of two minutes through Navjot Kaur and Navpreet Kaur to take a 4-2 lead. The Rourkela team showed its fighting qualities as Surabhi Pradhan and Birajini Ekka scored a goal each to even the score at 4-4. Then Hardeep Kaur came up with the winner to clinch the issue for the Shahabad team, a minute after the last goal for the opponent. S.S. Girls HS wins In the other semifinal, S.S. Girls High School, Simdega, Jharkhand, beat Jai Hind Junior High School, Imphal, 3-1 in the tie-break after the teams had locked 1-1 at the end of the regulation period and extra-time. B. Memtombi put the Manipur team ahead in the 22nd minute through a penalty corner goal and the Jharkhand girls equalised seven minutes later through skipper Aruna Kujur. In the tie-break, Aruna Kujur, Suchita Tirkey and Khushbu Dung Dung converted for the Jharkhand team while S. Lombi alone was successful for the Manipur team in its four attempts. — Special Correspondent
