The pie gets a little bigger

Sharath S. Srivatsa

BANGALORE: The hospitality industry in the city that reeled under pressure of the slowdown during the last two years seems to be slowly coming back to normality in the last few months.

Pubs and restaurants have reported increased footfalls in the last six to eight months, while the holiday season, especially during this Dasara festivity, witnessed improved room occupancy rate.

While some restaurants have slowly started replacing the old rate cards with the revised ones, pubs and fine dine restaurants are yet to revise their rates, claim industry insiders.

Pubs in the city, which is known for its pub culture, had witnessed a drop in business by 25 per cent since September 2008.

“Pubs and restaurants are doing much better than before, and we hope it would be back to normal by the end of this financial year (April 2011),” said Ashish Kothare, president, The Association of Bar and Restaurants, Pubs and Hotels, Bangalore. The overall business, he pointed out, had come down by about 25 per cent since September 2008, which has now picked up by about 15 to 20 per cent.

Pubs cautious

Jittery pub owners are yet to increase the prices that they had dropped to woo customers during the slowdown period. “Prices are not being revised as everyone fears about loss of business,” Mr. Kothare says. Meanwhile, president of Bruhat Bengaluru Hotels Association K.N. Vasudev Adiga said though the situation has improved, it is still not comfortable. He said hotels recorded a decline in business by about 20 per cent during the slowdown.
