Coimbatore starts favourite

Coimbatore: With a host of promising shooters, both young and experienced, in its rank, Coimbatore will be the team to watch when the 36th State shooting championship begins at the Coimbatore Rifle Club range here on Wednesday.

The five-day championship has attracted over 300 shooters from various clubs in the State besides shooters from the Tamil Nadu Police and Heavy Vehicles Factory.

The bulk of the entries are from Coimbatore. “Our Club is the most active in the State,” said Coimbatore City Police Commissioner Sylendra Babu, the President of the host Club.

Doing well

“We have been doing consistently well the past two years. And, our boys and girls will continue to perform,” he added. The girls have been dominating the 10m air rifle class.

“Praveena is our best bet in the pistol event. There are a lot of other junior shooters such as Vignesh Krishna and Abhishek whom we can count on.

“International shooters J.S. Venkatachalapathi and R. Shivanth Krishna are the strong contenders in the men's rifle event.

Team looks stronger

“Overall, the team looks much stronger compared to the previous year,” said N. Shanmugam, who will play the dual role of a shooter and coach.

Sumeet Sanghvi and veteran warhorse Geetha Shankar are expected to reap a rich harvest for Chennai in the pistol events.

Interestingly, Sylendra Babu, who will inaugurate the event, will also test his skills.

“I have been doing well in practise but not able to translate the same during competition,” he said.

The championship will act as the qualifiers for the G.V. Mavlankar shooting championship to be held in Guwahati in November.

The opening day will be the official practice day for the shooters.

Delegation to Malaysia

All-India Tennis Association Vice-President Karti P. Chidambaram will head a 36-member sports delegation from Tamil Nadu to Malaysia for the Malaysian Indian-Tamil Nadu Youth Sports festival in Kedah on October 29 and 30.

The disciplines are tennis, badminton, squash, ten-pin bowling and karate.
