Search conducted for pistol that ex-MLA threw into Cooum

Staff Reporter

CHENNAI: A one-hour-long search by firemen to locate a pistol, which the former MLA and accused in a cheating case, K. Ravishankar, allegedly threw into the Cooum river in Chetpet here in 2008, did not yield the desired result.

Police said Ravishankar had cheated a family in Coimbatore in 2008 of some gold jewellery by posing as an IT official. He also allegedly took with him a pistol from the house.

Ravishankar was arrested in Chennai on October 19 after he, along with his brother, posed as IT officials and robbed a family in Moorthy Street, West Mambalam. The women of the house raised an alarm and Ravishankar was caught by the public when he tried to flee. He was handed over to the Ashok Nagar police but his accomplice fled with 25 sovereigns and Rs.20,000.

Ravishankar was remanded to custody and sent to Puzhal prison. On Friday, he was taken into police custody for questioning in the case.

“He confessed to having committed the crime in West Mambalam and eight more offences using the same modus operandi at various places including Coimbatore, Vellore and suburban Chennai,” said a senior investigating officer.

Based on his confession, police teams recovered more than 120 sovereigns of jewellery which he had sold to gold dealers across the State.

Around 11.30 a.m. on Tuesday, a police team brought the ex-MLA to the spot where he threw the pistol. With the assistance of firemen, a search was carried out till 12.30 p.m. to locate the weapon. Later, Ravishankar was sent back to judicial custody and lodged at the Puzhal prison.
