Students exposed to employability skills

TIRUCHI: Students of Nehru Memorial College, Puthanampatti, were prepared for the job market through expert sessions on Saturday and Sunday.

The workshop on Career Guidance and Counselling exposed students to sessions on resume writing; attending interviews; choosing careers; motivation and creativity; psychological worlds in individuals and institutions; and behind and beyond individual and institutional efficiency; success and prosperity.

The sessions were handled by A Noel Joseph Irudayaraj, Chairperson and Head(Retd), School of English and Foreign Languages, Bharathidasan University; S Senthilnathan, Assistant Professor of the Dept of Educational Technology, Bharathidasan University; and K T Tamilmani, Head, Head of the Dept of English of Nehru Memorial College, Puthanampatti. The programme was organised by the College's Career Guidance and Counselling Centre with UGC funding under the merged scheme of XI plan period, Prof. Tamilmani said.

According to Dr. Noel, students must acquire capability to recreate their acquired knowledge suitably while choosing a career; keep involving themselves in knowledge pursuits; derive delight in career choice; ever be on the job hunt with native intelligence; conquer fear to succeed by mastering the psycho-physical mechanism, and confine pursuits to areas of interest only.

Earlier in his keynote address on ‘Towards a Brave New World' at the inaugural session, Prof. Noel urged students to acquire knowledge and apply them for material prosperity. Skill development, he said, was realisation of one's inherent potential. Linguistic competence, psychological orientation and domain knowledge determines success in career,

In his inaugural address, M Ponnambalam, Chairman, College Governing Body, explained the relevance of English at the global level, and appealed to students to cultivate a probing mind for making their learning pursuits fruitful.

He advised them to be conscious of their non-verbal behaviour during interview and give crisp answers.

The students were also addressed by A. Rajendran, the Co-ordinator of the Career Guidance Centre. Presiding over the inaugural, the Principal K. Ramasami said the Centre performed the role of honing the life skills of students for employability, thereby equipping them to face challenges

College Committee President Pon Balasubramanian presided over the valedictory session and distributed certificates to the participants. He called upon students to be constant thinkers.
