Hike grant under Kalaignar Housing Scheme, says Jayalalithaa

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: AIADMK general secretary Jayalalithaa on Tuesday urged Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi to take steps to bring down prices of construction materials, besides making a strong case for increasing the grant given under Kalaignar Housing Scheme.

“At a time the cost of construction materials has doubled, the grant of Rs.75,000 is not adequate. It should be increased to Rs.3 lakh,” she said in a statement.

The price of cement had increased to Rs.330 a bag from Rs.150 while that of two units of sand had gone up to Rs.6,500 from Rs.4,500. The price of a load of bricks had increased to Rs. 27,500 from Rs.16,000. “The ordinary and poor people, who have already started construction, are groping in the dark because of the sudden increase in prices of construction materials.”

She alleged that beneficiaries of the scheme were under pressure from the ruling party workers to hand over construction works to builders close to them.
