Four of a family killed in wall collapse

Staff Reporter

Miraculous escape for two-year-old

BERHAMPUR: Four persons of a dalit family, including a child and two women, died when a wall of a house collapsed on them at Kodala in Ganjam district on Tuesday night.

According to police sources, the mishap occurred at Bauri Sahi area under Kodala Notified Area Council (NAC) at around 1am on Tuesday night. There were six persons in the house, including two children and two women. The victims were sleeping while the earthen wall fell on them.

The victims of the mishap were Harihar Nahak (70), his wife Jhunu Nahak (60), Harihar's daughter Pari Das (35) and Pari's 12 year old son Raja Das. Harihar and Jhunu died on the spot. Pari and her son died in the Kodala hospital. Pari's husband Angad Das was seriously injured. Initially he was admitted to Kodala hospital. But later he was shifted to the MKCG medical college in the city as his condition deteriorated.

But Pari and Angad's two-year-old son Rahul Das had a miraculous escape. He survived unscathed. He is now being kept by the neighbours as no near and dear are around to take care of this toddler.

It was as if death had called up Harihar and Jhunu to the spot on Tuesday. These residents of Kalirampalli under Kavisuryanagar police station had come to their daughter Pari's house on Tuesday morning. This old couple had a day of merrymaking with their daughter, son in law Angad and grandchildren. After having dinner at around 9 pm the family had gone to sleep.

Angad was a menial labourer. So, he lived in a thatched house that had old earthen walls. According to police sources, rain water had seeped into the walls during recent rains and made them weak. But neither Angad nor his wife had noticed it. One of the corroded walls fell without any warning while the six members of the family were sleeping. Hearing loud noise, neighbours rushed to the spot. They immediately made efforts to rescue the family. Yet Harihar and Jhunu were found to have died when they were taken out. Pari, Raja and Angad were seriously injured. But the toddler Rahul was found to have survived. Pari and Raja succumbed to their injuries at the Kodala hospital.

Meanwhile, Kodala tehsildar Chinmaya Kumar Acharya has visited the spot and provided financial help from the Red Cross funds.
