LDF retains Attingal

TIRUVANANTHAPURAM: In the midst of reverses elsewhere, the Left Democratic Front retained control of the Attingal municipality winning 17 of the 31 wards.

While the United Democratic Front bagged 13 wards, the Bharatiya Janata Party won one ward.

Of the 17 candidates who won on the LDF label, 16, are from the CPI(M) and one, from the CPI.

In the UDF camp, 12 winning candidates are from the Congress and one, from the Muslim League.

Before the UDF came to power in Attingal in the local body elections held in 2000, the LDF had ruled the municipality for close to 25 years. In 2005, however, the LDF won back Attingal from the UDF, winning 16 of the 28 seats.

While the Democratic Indira Congress (Karunakaran) won two, the UDF four and the BJP, one, and Independents five seats.

This time there will be no Independents in the municipal council. The BJP member in the previous council, N. Padmanabhan, will again be the party's sole representative in this council.
