Pune: Maharashtra and Karnataka will witness a “rail roko andolan” on Friday, which will highlight the plight of sugarcane, soyabean and cotton farmers in the two States. The protest, to be staged by Shetkari Sanghatana and Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana (SSS), will demand a hike in payments to famers, lifting the export ban on sugarcane and cotton permanently, and taking farmers into confidence while the Government considers decontrolling the sugar industry. “The highest number of farmers' suicides in Vidarbha this year is going to be among soyabean growers. While the price in the international market is Rs. 2,900 a quintal, Indian farmers get only Rs. 1,800 to Rs, 2,000 a quintal,” Ravikant Tupkar of the SSS told The Hindu.
