HYDERABAD: The State government has finally agreed to install a statue of Komaram Bheem in the city. In the face of mounting pressure from pro-Telangana outfits and political parties, the Department of Culture has asked the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation authorities to allot a suitable place for installation of the statue. The Telangana Rashtra Samithi and Bharatiya Janata Party demanded the installation of Komaram Bheem, a legendary tribal leader hailing from Adilabad, who worked for uplift of tribals and waged relentless struggle against the Nizam rule. The BJP leaders went to the extent of threatening to dismantle the statues installed on Tank Bund if Komaram Bheem's statue was not installed there. No response S. Chellappa, Principal Secretary, Culture, said the department sought funds from the Tribal Welfare Department in the preparation and installation of the statue. It had decided to spend the amounts from its budget as there was no response so far, he added.
