Eight barrages to be built across Vedavati at a cost of Rs. 35 crore

Staff Correspondent

Challakere (Chitradurga district): To make full use of the Vedavati river water for drinking and irrigation purposes, the Government has decided to construct eight barrages across the river at a cost of Rs. 35 crore, said Minister for Minor Irrigation Govind M. Karjol.

Addressing presspersons after offering “Bagina” to the new barrage at Jajoor village of the taluk on Wednesday, he said that the barrages would help in increasing groundwater level in their surroundings.

He said that approval for the Rs. 35-crore projects would be given soon. The project would help irrigate 3,800 acres of land of the taluk. Besides this, the Government has made an action plan of Rs. 2 crore to repair the Right Bank Canal of Narayanapura.

Tenders had been called for to construct a barrage near Nagagondanahalli. The foundation stone for the project would be laid soon, he said.

Mr. Karjol said that work would be taken up to construct a barrage across the Swarnamukhi near Samudrahalli of Hiriyur taluk at a cost of Rs. 3 crore. A plan has also been made to build a feeder channel at Ranikere of Challakere taluk.

“The department has decided to provide irrigation facilities wherever possible in the district to provide water facilities to farmers,” he said.

In his address, Challakere MLA Tippeswamy said that the Bharatiya Janata Party Government had approved the long-pending Upper Bhadra Irrigation Project to provide irrigation facilities to the drought-prone Chitradurga district.

MLC G.H. Tippareddy and BJP's district president Siddesh Yadav were present.
