NCDC expert team visits Gadiganur

Staff Correspondent

BHUVANAHALLI (BELLARY DISTRICT): A team of experts from the regional office of the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) in Bangalore visited Gadiganur and Bhuvanahalli villages in Hospet taluk of the district following an outbreak of malaria, claiming the lives of 17 persons since October 18.

The team, headed by Sohanlal, Deputy Director, will also visit 10 villages coming under the Gadiganur Primary Health Centre, where malaria cases/deaths have been reported, for a study/investigation on the cause of the outbreak of the disease and also about the cause of death, and submit a report.

In an informal chat with presspersons here on Wednesday, Mr. Sohanlal said that the team would collect details of the investigation reports conducted so far, radical treatment given and precautionary measures taken to control the spread of the disease, besides talking to the people before submitting its report.

“During our visit to the village, we will observe the precautionary measures taken and instruct the Health Department, in case we find any lacuna, to make suitable corrections. Ours and the Health Department's main efforts would be to control the spread of the disease,” he said.

Srikant Basur, District Health Officer, said that over 6,000 blood smears were collected and examined.

Of these, 430 returned positive.

Radical treatment had been given to all and the incidence was on the decline and under control.

He said that apart from taking precautionary measures to control the spread of disease, including spraying of DDT and fogging, awareness is being created among the public about the need to maintain cleanliness and hygiene during the door-to-door surveillance in the malaria-affected villages.

Abdullah, District Surveillance Officer, and Ramesh Babu of the Health Department were present.
