BJP calls meet to discuss court verdict, ZP polls

Special Correspondent

Leaders to be assigned tasks for the elections

Bangalore: The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party has convened a meeting its legislature party on Friday.

These meeting had originally been convened mainly to hold discussions on the party's preparations for the forthcoming zilla panchayat and taluk panchayat elections in addition to taking stock of the political developments in the State. However, the outcome of the Karnataka High Court's verdict on the case related to disqualification of rebel MLAs is expected to take the centrestage of discussions with the court on Thursday night posting the case for orders on Friday.

According to sources, the party may hold consultations on zilla panchayat elections if the verdict goes in its favour. In that case, the party is expected to decide on assigning responsibility of monitoring party's preparations in each district to different leaders.

With the political turmoil in the State having brought the Opposition Congress and the Janata Dal (Secular) together, the zilla panchayat elections have turned out to be a challenge for the BJP. The party leadership is keen on making inroads into the grassroot politics through these rural political bodies by using the zilla panchayat elections, which have come for the first time when the party is in power.

Besides, the party leadership feels that putting up a good performance in the zilla panchayat elections will go a long way in providing a strong base for the party organisation in the next Assembly elections.

In this connection, Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa is also expected to tour the State by organising conventions of beneficiaries under the Bhagyalakshmi scheme ahead of the zilla panchayat polls.

‘Doors closed for rebels'

Meanwhile, Mr. Yeddyurappa made it clear on Thursday that there was no question of readmitting any of the disqualified MLAs to the Bharatiya Janata Party fold.

He told presspersons that BJP workers were against including the disqualified MLAs to the party fold as they were responsible for the political turmoil witnessed by the State in the last few weeks.

He said none of the party leaders too were interested in the re-entry of disqualified legislators into the party organisation.

Mr. Yeddyurappa's remarks have come close on the heels of Wednesday's high drama in which efforts by Bellary Ministers to bring back some of the disqualified MLAs to the party fold was snubbed by the party.

Meanwhile, BJP general secretary C.T. Ravi said he was fully opposed to any proposal for reinclusion of disqualified legislators and termed it as a closed chapter.
