Advani, Sethi remain unbeaten

Geet Sethi

LEEDS: Pankaj Advani and Geet Sethi were the only cueists to remain unbeaten in their respective groups in the World professional billiards championship at the Northern Snooker Centre here on Friday.

While defending champion Advani cruised to a 965-457 victory over compatriot Sourav Kothari, Sethi exhibited his fluency while constructing breaks of 163, 517 and 301 (unfinished) to outclass Matt Sutton 1199-223 in their encounter which concluded late on Thursday night.

Gilchrist compiled timely breaks of 129, 173 and 110 to ward off Marshall's challenge 674-422.

The crucial match between Ian Williamson and former top snooker professional Robert Marshall in which the latter needed to defeat Williamson by over 304 points to qualify as the No. 2 from Group D provided substantial nervous moments for both Marshall and Gilchrist, who would have been the beneficiary had Marshall won by less than 304 points.

However, the pressure got to Marshall and he lost 375-321. Gilchrist now runs into Sethi in the last eight stage.

Peaking well

Advani began with a 255 on his very first visit to signal his intentions.

Rupesh Shah lost by 46 points to Sidharth Parikh but still managed to qualify as the No. 2 from group B through a better point differential.

The quarterfinal line-up: Advani vs Sitwala; Sethi vs Gilchrist; Causier vs Kothari; Russell vs Shah.

The results (round-robin): Sethi bt Matt Sutton 1199 (163, 517, 301)-223; Martin Goodwill bt Devendra Joshi 500(184)-493(207); Sidharth Parikh bt Bem French 964-201; Hirst bt Shandilya 560-386(160); Kothari bt Pandya 1152 (195, 105, 155, 169, 100)-189; Causier bt Mumford 1150 (154, 182, 236)-289; Gilchrist bt Marshall 674 (129, 173, 110)-422; Russell bt Rogers 820 (191, 117, 183, 132)-338; Parikh bt Shah 416-352(163); Sitwala bt Hirst 430-429; Advani bt Kothari 965(255, 128, 103)-457 .
