VIJAYAWADA: Responding to reports of diversion of rice meant for distribution in the public distribution system in Reddygudem mandal of Krishna district, the district administration has examined the samples of PDS rice in all mandals and came to the conclusion that the rice sold by six fair price shops in Reddygudem mandal was of inferior quality. Joint Collector Gaurav Uppal, who visited the mandal on Friday, addressed a press conference late in the evening and disclosed that the contractor who was vested with the responsibility of lifting the rice from the mandal level stock point and supplying it to the FP shops, indulged in a fraud and diverted the rice to open market in East Godavari district. He replaced the PDS rice with open market rice of inferior quality in the case of six shops. A case of fraud and cheating was registered against the contractor, K. Guneswara Rao, under the sections of the IPC as well as the Essential Commodities Act. Two lorries used for the diversion of rice were also seized. Dealers of all six fair price shops had since then been suspended and cases booked against them too. A show cause notice had been issued to the mandal tahsildar for appointing a village servant as route officer, though the latter was not competent for the task. The village servant had been suspended, Dr. Uppal said.
