KADAPA: All India Democratic Women's Association members staged a dharna before Kadapa Collectorate on Saturday demanding that the official machinery initiate measures to check the atrocities of micro-finance institutions towards poor families. AIDWA secretary Jameela and leaders represented the woes of MFI loanees to Minister for Minority Welfare Mohd. Ahmedullah and district Collector Shashi Bhushan Kumar. MFI representatives were exerting pressure, showering abuses and assaulting the loanees if they failed to pay a couple of repayment instalments owing to their poor economic status, they said. Pressure Citing instances of some loanees committing suicide in different parts of Kadapa district unable to bear pressure from MFIs, they demanded stern action against the institutions. The Minister and the district Collector said that the government issued an Ordinance to protect the interests of poor persons and officials were implementing it with sincerity. They assured action if specific instances were brought to the notice of officials.
