MADRID: Giuseppe Rossi scored a penalty deep into injury time as 10-man Villarreal salvaged a 1-1 draw at Sporting Gijon on Sunday to stay in touch with Spanish leader Real Madrid.

Carlos Marchena was tugged down inside the Sporting area for the Italy striker to step up and slot his sixth goal of the season past Juan Pablo Colinas in the 94th minute.

Gonzalo Rodriguez handled inside the area to set up Sporting's opener as Diego Castro scored with a 69th-minute penalty. Gonzalo was then sent off in the 77th after receiving a second yellow card for obstructing David Barral's run to further complicate the game for the visitor.

But the “Yellow Submarine” managed to pull out a point at El Molinon stadium to stay with the favourites.

“We are happy with the draw,” Cazorla said. “Above all with how the game ended with us playing with one man less.”

Madrid stays top with 23 points, while Barcelona trails by one point. Villarreal is alone in third with 20 points.

In the Italian league, Andre Dias scored the only goal of the match to give 10-man Lazio a 1-0 win away to Palermo.

The result stretches Lazio's lead in the Serie A standings to four points. Lazio is top with 22 points, Inter Milan is second with 18 and AC Milan is a further point behind. All three have played nine games.

Dias scored in the 27th minute from a curling Mauri freekick to the far post.

Palermo was unable to find a way past Lazio goalkeeper Fernando Muslera, despite the Rome side going a man down after Giuseppe Biava was sent off with 13 minutes to go.

The Uruguayan pulled off several athletic saves to deny the Sicilian club an equaliser.

“It is always hard to come to Palermo and win,” Muslera said, “but the whole team played a part in this win and that is what made the difference today.”

Napoli prepared for its match against Liverpool in the Europa League with a 1-0 away win over Brescia, but needed a late goal from Ezequiel Lavezzi to break the deadlock.

The Argentine hit his third goal of the season from Marek Hamsik's low cross to take Napoli up to fifth in the table, level with Juventus on 15 points.

The results: La Liga: Sporting Gijon 1 (Castro 68) drew with Villarreal 1 (Rossi 90-pen); Deportivo la Coruna 3 (Adrian 28, Lopo 76, Colotto 87) bt Espanyol 0; Racing Santander 4 (Kennedy 26, Rosenberg 35, 61, Torrejon 85) bt Osasuna 1 (Nekounam 58-pen); Malaga 1 (Juanmi 77) lost to Real Sociedad 2 (Griezmann 43, Llorente 55); Atletico Madrid 1 (Aguero 33) drew with Almeria 1 (Piatti 45); Athletic Bilbao 3 (Iraola 6, Dominguez 12-pen, Gabilondo 83) bt Getafe 0.
