KOLKATA: Brazilian Jose Barreto struck twice and Muritala Ali once to take Mohun Bagan past Southern Samity in the Calcutta Football League premier division game at the Mohun Bagan ground on Monday.
The win lifted Mohun Bagan to 25 points. This was its eighth win.
Since sacking I.M. Vijayan as its coach, Samity has been struggling to live upto the billing of a good side. Having recruited a number of players from East Bengal, Mohun Bagan and Chirag United, the team failed to put up a decent show in the ongoing league and today's defeat was no different.
After Barreto struck a brilliant goal in the ninth minute, Mohun Bagan had to wait till injury time to get the other two goals.
It was again Barreto who scored in first minute of the three minute injury time and almost at the stroke of close Muritala Ali found the target.
In between the two teams were engaged in midfield tussle and content to play some passive football leaving the sizeable home supporters disappointed. But what mattered most was the winning margin thanks to the Man of the Match, Barreto. — Special Correspondent
