Ganapathy for Asiad

Chennai: K.C. Ganapathy of the Tamil Nadu Sailing Association will represent the country at the sailing championships to be held during the Asian Games in China from November 12 to 27.

Ganapathy has recorded creditable finishes at the Asian Sailing Championship (Shanwei, China) and the Sail the Gulf championships (Doha, Qatar) this year, apart from claiming the gold at the YAI Centenary Regatta at Bhopal.

The current National Optimist champion, is coached by Munna Jamal, and for the last three months has been undergoing intensive training as a part of the National squad, under British coach Peter Conway.

Men's team felicitated

Tamil Nadu Badminton Association (TNBA) felicitated the Tamil Nadu men's team, which finished second in the South Zone inter-State championship in Sivakasi recently and qualified for the Senior National championship, at a simple function here on Monday.

“It's a great achievement. We have done it after 30 years. We are proud of you,” said Ashok Bajaj, Secretary, TNBA.

Bajaj gave away Rs. 10,000 to the players who were present — Siddharth Jain, S.S. Kannan and S. Subramanian and Rs. 5,000 to coaches T. Maran and Rajini Kanth.

Other playing members, Aditya Elango, M.R. Manikandan and V. Velavan, couldn't make it due to prior commitments.

Jain attributed the success to the team spirit and camaraderie. “We gelled well as a team. Ours was a nice blend of youth and experience,” he said.

Hemant Sinha, President, TNBA, also spoke.

Silver for Thinakaranand

Tamil Nadu's Thinakaranand won a silver and four of his State-mates picked up bronze medals in the individual categories to go with the two bronze in the team events at the recently-concluded National junior fencing championship held at Chhattisgarh.

The results:

Boys (Individual): Foil: Thinakaranand (silver), Balaji (bronze).

Team (Foil): Raghuram, Balaji, Thinakaranand, Raja Rajan (bronze).

Girls (Individual): Foil: Merbilin Shaj (bronze). Epee: Sushma (bronze). Sabre: Carolin Sandhya (bronze).

Team (Epee): Apsara, Lakshmi Prabha, Sushma, Yuvarani (bronze) .

Sri Sankara posts win

Sri Sankara Vidyalaya defeated PS HSS by 21 runs in the P.B. Trophy cricket tournament held here on Monday.

The scores: Sri Sankara Vidyalaya 109 for five in 25 overs (S. Chandra Sekar 55, S. Vijay Ashwath 38) bt PS HSS 88 in 22 overs (K. Vignesh 49, S. Gautam Swaminath four for 7, S. Vijay Ashwath three for 14) .

Table tennis tournament

The Mylapore Club- Sportstar City Schools knockout table tennis tournament will be held between November 18 and 21 at the club premises. Entries close on November 14. For details contact 24995315.
