Anand back as World No. 1

NEW DELHI: A slender gain for Viswanathan Anand and a mighty fall of Magnus Carlsen has helped the Indian World chess champion to regain the World No. 1 spot in the latest ranking list released on Monday.

In the past two months, Anand gained four ranking points to reach his career-best 2804 points while in the same period, Carlsen lost a whopping 24 points to slip to the second spot.

Anand last held the number one spot on September 30, 2008. His previous best ranking was 2803, posted in April 2008.

However, if the live rankings are considered after Carlsen won a premier event at Nanjing (China) on Saturday, the Norwegian heads the rankings with 2811 points, three ahead of Anand.
