Karwar: Chairman of the Karnataka State Human Rights Commission (KSHRC) S.R. Nayak has said that it is shameful that elected representatives hide in resorts instead of dealing with governance, in reference to the ongoing political drama in the State. Addressing presspersons here on Tuesday, Mr. Nayak said that it was unfortunate that some elected representatives had been using chicanery to further their own ends. He said that the anti-defection law had to be strengthened. In a veiled reference to Anand Asnotikar, former Minister and disqualified MLA from Karwar, Mr. Nayak said that if a person could not adjust to the political environment of a party, then he should resign from the party and the Assembly and uphold democratic values instead of blackmailing the elected government. Mr. Nayak said that the KSHRC was working efficiently despite shortage of staff and offices. He said that the Government should consider setting up KSHRC branches in six police ranges of the State. A proposal was sent to the Government for the appointment of 491 staff in the Bangalore office but only 105 were recruited. Mr. Nayak said that till August 30 of this year, a total of 21,349 cases had been filed, of which 4,000 were suo motu cases. A total of 12,005 cases had been disposed of, he said. In-charge Deputy Commissioner K.H. Narasimhamurthy and Superintendent of Police Raman Gupta were present.
