Wheat flour to be given under PDS

Staff Correspondent

It's to prevent misuse of wheat: Minister

DAVANGERE: V. Somanna, Food and Civil Supplies Minister, said on Tuesday that the Government would henceforth provide wheat flour (atta) instead of wheat under the Public Distribution System to prevent misuse and black-marketing of wheat.

Speaking to presspersons at Chennagiri where he inaugurated an ‘akki santhe', Mr. Somanna said that the States of Tamil Nadu and Gujarat had already started giving wheat flour instead of wheat under the PDS.

The Minister said that the BJP government had taken a bold decision to provide rice to above the poverty line (APL) card-holders also. The decision was taken because the price of rice had gone up considerably in the past year and even middle-class and lower middle-class people were hit by it.

Mr. Somanna said that all the fair price depots had been instructed to compulsorily display the stock of foodgrains under the PDS and their prices.

He reportedly issued a stern warning that the licences of shops would be cancelled if they were found closed on working days. He appealed to the people to lodge complaints with the authorities concerned aganist anyone violating the norms.

G.M. Siddeshwar, MP, and Madal Veeerupakshappa, MLA, were present.
