Rain forces Chief Minister to skip Nargund visit

Staff Correspondent

NARGUND (Gadag District): While inclement weather prevented Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa from flying to Nargund in Gadag district for the “mega distribution” of saris for Bhagyalakshmi beneficiaries, the rain god forced the organisers to wind up the function within 15minutes.

A large number of people from different taluks of Gadag district, mainly beneficiaries (women) of the scheme for the girl child, had come to Nargund to receive saris, and the Chief Minister on his arrival. However, they had to get drenched along with their baby girls and had to face hardships because of the downpour before they finally received the saris.

Women had come to the venue in the morning and some of them, along with their children, did get a health check-up at the venue. However, rain and lack of proper arrangements at the food counters left them stranded. “We have been waiting since three hours. There are no proper arrangements. Our children got drenched in the rain. Now they say that they will give us sari while we board the bus to our native places,” said Prabhavati of Rajuru in Ron taluk, who had come along with her daughter Sridevi and 50 others from her village.

It was a similar experience for nearly 100 women who had come from Shirol village. In the absence of the Chief Minister, Health and Family Welfare Minister B. Sriramulu and Woman and Child Development Minister C.C. Patil symbolically handed over the saris to a few beneficiaries at the programme that was cut short to 15 minutes because of the downpour.
