Rainwater yet to recede in low-lying areas

Staff Reporter

KAKINADA: Rainwater is yet to recede completely from many low-lying areas of the city even on Saturday. As the high tide in the sea (‘potu' in local parlance) is still continuing, the sea is not taking the rainwater. Since there is a respite from the rain, daily labourers resumed to work by leaving aged people and children at homes. Shortage of food packets and drinking water is the common problem being aired by the residents of many slum areas of the city.

Even as the relief and rehabilitation camps launched by the district administration were going on, the attendance was thin except during lunch and dinner time. Stagnation of rainwater is preventing the medical and sanitation teams to visit water-logged colonies. Complaints of fever, cold and headache were being aired by the cyclone victims at the medical camps conducted at the rehabilitation centres.

Fear of absenting the enumeration was continuing among the hutments, as the process was yet to be launched by the officials. District Collector M. Ravi Chandra, who convened a tele-conference with the district officials on Saturday, issued guidelines pertaining to the enumeration process. He said that the details of damaged crops and houses must be submitted along with photographs.

Mr. Ravi Chandra asked the doctors to attend the hospital duties half a day and visit the slum areas in the remaining day, so that medical aid would be provided to the cyclone victims. Asking the revenue officials to take steps to complete the disbursement of 20 kg of rice and five litres of kerosene each to the cyclone-affected families at the earliest, he said that the coupons being used for the disbursement must carry all the details including the signature of the beneficiary.
