SALEM: Free swine flu vaccine for below poverty line (BPL) families was introduced at the Salem Government Medical College Hospital here on Saturday.

Collector J. Chandrakumar who inaugurated the free vaccination, said that the government had sanctioned as many as 40,000 doses under Phase I of the vaccination programme that was being undertaken.

He said that since October 6, the vaccine was administered to the needy at subsidized prices.

Guidelines

From Saturday it was being administered free of cost as per the government guidelines that had been issued regarding the matter.

A total of 2,500 vials for nasal vaccination had been received at the Salem hospital. It could vaccinate 12,500 people.

He further said that an additional 2,500 vials as injections also had been received.

This would enable the hospital to vaccinate an additional 25,000 persons. The beneficiaries could bring the identity cards issued for Kalaignar Life Insurance Scheme.

So far the hospital had administered swine-flu vaccines to as many as 1,624 persons including 680 health staff.

The hospital had a separate ward for swine flu-affected patients.

A senior doctor said that at present 20 persons with symptoms had been undergoing treatment while five had been diagnosed as ‘affected.'

Medical Superintendent Dr. N. Mohan presided over the function in which 15 persons came forward to get vaccinated on Saturday.
